ABOUT ME: my musician bio
Yan Hei Lam is a classical music composer whose work focuses on chamber music and ensemble writing, including wind band, symphony orchestra and choral music. Alongside concert composition, Lam is also active in pop music arrangement, rearrangement, and sound design, bridging classical techniques with contemporary musical practices. Working as a freelance composer and arranger, Lam has over three years of professional experience collaborating with performers, educators, and institutions.
Lam studied at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, where they completed a Diploma in Music with a major in Composition. Their formal training is complemented by strong performance foundations, including an ABRSM Grade 8 Piano qualification awarded with distinction, which continues to inform their compositional and arranging work.
Lam’s music has been presented in both chamber and concert settings. One of their works was performed by Darragh Morgan and Mary Dullea of the internationally recognized Fidelio Trio, marking a significant milestone in Lam’s artistic development. Several of Lam’s compositions have also been premiered at the Lee Foundation Theatre, contributing to Singapore’s contemporary music scene. These performances reflect Lam’s interest in writing music that balances structural clarity with expressive depth, while remaining closely attuned to the performers and performance context.
Lam received recognition through the Singapore New Score Competition 2026, highlighting their engagement with contemporary compositional discourse and emerging voices in new music.
In addition to composing, Lam is actively involved in music education and arrangement for educational settings. They have arranged music for Sparkletots Preschool and Punggol Primary School, tailoring musical material to suit young performers and institutional needs. Lam has also taught music theory and piano to adult learners, gaining experience in adapting pedagogical approaches for students with diverse musical backgrounds and goals.
Currently, Lam is focused on experimenting with and exploring new musical genres, with particular interest in jazz and game industry music, expanding their compositional language beyond traditional classical frameworks while maintaining a strong technical foundation.
